March 7, 2000:

News and Links:

Robert Freitas (author of Nanomedicine) has joined Zyvex as a research scientist. Zyvex has a press release on it at http://www.zyvex.com/PressReleases/FreitasJoinsZyvex.html.

Site Update:

I'm still working on updating the scripts to work with the new web host--I've had other duties take up my spare time the past two weeks and haven't had much time to work on the updates.

Site Update:

I'm moving the site to a different web host. Hopefully there won't be any problems from this, but if your DNS nameserver doesn't get updated, the new location will still be http://www.nanosite.net but the new IP address will be at http://209.204.250.242/. The guestbook and other scripts will be offline until I update them to work with the new web host. The new host has some nice built-in features and scripts that I'll be experimenting with over the coming week. Also, this web host will allow a MySQL database, and I plan to use this to create dynamic pages on the site and may use MySQL for message boards on the site. The MySQL support was my primary reason for moving the site.
While moving the site, I discovered that I've accidentally overwritten some newer pages with older pages, and I'll attempt to recover the information that I've overwritten.

The event listing has been updated in Events->Upcoming Events. New events added are: Commercialization of Nanostructured Materials conference, Carbon Nanotubes: Advances in Cutting Edge Applications & Scalable Production conference, and the Foresight Institute Spring 2000 Senior Associate Gathering.

EETimes has a short article entitled Nanoscale tweezers pluck molecules that mentions work at Harvard University that adds carbon nanotube tips to a scanning probe microscope to form a tweezer-like structure. There is an additional article in the article Lieber Develops 'Nanotweezers' to Manipulate Molecules in Harvard's Crimson magazine. Lieber's research group has a homepage at Harvard that descibes their work with nanoscale materials.
More information on the research can be found in Science magazine in the report Nanotube Nanotweezers, by Philip Kim and Charles M. Lieber, Science 1999 December 10; 286: 2148-2150. (in Reports). Additionally, that same issue of Science has an article Tweezers for the Nanotool Kit, by Chad A. Mirkin, Science 1999 December 10; 286: 2095-2096. (in Perspectives). To view the abstracts/summaries of the article, visit Science magazine online at http://www.sciencemag.com and register, then search for nanotweezers in the article search (if you have a subscription to the magazine, you can also view the whole text of the articles).

In America, President Clinton has proposed a National Nanotechnology Initiative with a $497 million budget for the fiscal year 2001 . This is an 84% increase from the year 2000 budget of $270 million.

The Wall Street Journal has an article on nanotechnology entitled Think Small, by Timothy Aeppel. This article discusses some background on nanotechnology and gives a fairly balanced view of nanotechnology, including both pros and cons.

Site Update:

I'm still catching up on email replies to queries about nanotechnology. Because of the problems with my home computer, I have had trouble keeping up with email. Also, I've contacted a new web host about moving to a different hosting service--this shouldn't affect accessing the site. I'll be adding more contact information to some of the university/company research listings in the upcoming weeks.
